Poultry meat role in food security

Reflecting on food security, after World Food Safety Day 2026
🐔 Earlier this week, we reflected on World Food Safety Day and the distinction between food safety and food security. Today, let’s look at the second part of that equation.
Food security means that people have access to sufficient, nutritious, and affordable food.
When discussions about food security arise, attention often focuses on future challenges: population growth, resource constraints, and the need to feed more people sustainably.
But food security is also about the choices available to families today.
The meals served in schools.
The products available in grocery stores.
The affordable sources of protein that people can reliably access week after week.
This is where poultry plays an important role.
Every day, poultry contributes to nutrition, affordability, and accessibility in food systems around the world. It provides high-quality protein, supports balanced diets, and helps make nutritious food available to billions of people.
And importantly, food security depends on food safety. Food must not only be available, it must also be safe.
Together, food safety and food security help build trust in food systems and support healthier communities worldwide.
At IPC, we promote both because they are complementary goals that help ensure food systems work for everyone.
