World Zoonoses Day

World Zoonoses Day 2026

🌍 Last week, on 6 July, the global community marked World Zoonoses Day, an opportunity to raise awareness about diseases that can spread between animals and humans, and to recognize the importance of preventing them before they emerge or spread.

🧪 The date commemorates Louis Pasteur’s first successful rabies vaccination in 1885, a milestone that reminds us how science, collaboration and prevention remain our strongest tools against zoonotic diseases. Today, around 60% of human infectious diseases are zoonotic in origin, and some 75% of emerging infectious diseases have originated in animals, underscoring the importance of continued vigilance and coordinated action.

🤝 At the International Poultry Council, we support science-based measures that strengthen animal and public health. This includes promoting strong biosecurity, effective surveillance, transparent reporting, responsible animal health management, and collaboration across the One Health community. These efforts help build resilient food systems while protecting animal health, public health, food security and livelihoods.

🌱 This year’s WorldZoonosesDay also highlighted the importance of the One Health approach. We welcome FAO‘s efforts to raise awareness of how human, animal and environmental health are interconnected, and the need for coordinated action to prevent zoonotic diseases at their source.
